How it Works

There are three primary ways to pacify vata:

  1. Remove the etiological cause (hetu) which has caused the aggravated state of vata. This could be caused from stress, emf, physical fatigue, dehydration, malnutrition, over use of the senses, eating too dry or drying food, poor daily routine, etc.

  2. Vata can become aggravated if there is a deficiency of a specific nutrient that is required by the body. Naturally, this can be alleviated by giving the appropriate nutrients in the appropriate way.

  3. As the body ages above 50, one moves into a vata time of life, or one can be predisposed to high vata because of ones body type. In these situations, vata will have a tendency to become higher than the balance of pitta and kapha, so one will have to calm vata and bring it back into balance with the other doshas of pitta and kapha.

In this Vata Abhyanga Oil with Magnesium and Vitamin D, Vaidya Mishra has addressed all three of these factors.

The herbs used in this Abhyanga oil were chosen because their specific prabhava (ayurvedic action) is counteracting the most common etiological causes of vata aggravation. Vata is the principal that governs the intelligence of proper timing and quantity of the movements within the body. This intelligence can become compromised as aggravation accumulates over time. These herbs have the special ability to restore the intelligence to the physiology and pacify the accumulation of vata.

Magnesium and Vitamin D3 are added to this formula so they may be absorbed into the body transdermally. Both of these have been shown to cause toxicity if too much is taken orally, but they can be healthfully absorbed in the transdermal form. Almost everyone is deficient in Magnesium; this deficiency is a common precursor of vata aggravation. A lack of Vitamin D can cause all five of the subdoshas of vata to become aggravated and out of balance, so it is naturally an important part of the protocol for pacifying vata.

Warm sesame and grapeseed oil is one of the best carriers for pacifying vata because its warm and unctuous qualities are so soothing to the dry and cold condition that accompanies vata aggravation.


Magnesium - Supports a safe and effective detoxification, relieves aches, pains and spasms, can elevate mood and calms the mind, nurtures the skin, calms overactive nerves, and can improve the quality of sleep.

Vita D3 (from Sheep Lanolin) - supports calcium absorption, immune system, cardiovascular health, vision, skin, joints and ligaments, and more.

Brahmi – Enhances collogen synthesis and is medhya (enhancing the coordination of the mind).

Shankapushpi – It is Twachya (nurturing to the skin) and is medhya (enhancing coordination of the mind). It also helps to pacify vyana vata in the skin due to aging or other aggravating factors.

Ashwagandha – Adaptogenic (helps raise the capacity for handling stress).

Jatamansi – Calms the mind.

Pushkarmool – Enhances the ability of the skin to handle environmental challenges.

Lavender – Soothing aroma that calms the mind.

Grapefruit – Anti-oxidants help preserve the subtle qualities of the oil.

Jasmine - Promotes intelligence in the skin.

Infused in a base of organic Sesame and Grapeseed oils.

Bottle Size

Choose between 16 fl. oz. and 4 fl. oz.


Warm the oil slightly in hot water in your sink, pour some oil into the palm of your hand and massage into the skin. When using a big bottle - pour an amount needed in a glass container and warm it up separately instead of holding a big plastic bottle under the hot water (sink). Use circular motions over the joints and swipe out and away from your core over the long bones. Leave the oil on your skin for 20 minutes before showering. You may leave it on for longer but you must cover your head with a cotton scarf to keep warm and stay away from cold drafts.

    I have so many favorites but this oil was how I was introduced to Vaidya Mishra and his products. It is light, easy to apply and has a pleasant smell. The benefit of Magnesium and Vitamin D lends to smooth skin and a pleasant night's sleep.

    It is difficult to describe the subtle aspects of this oil since that works so much better for my Vata constitution than others I have used. A top note is marvelous fragrance. I want to use the oil daily and do.

    For me there is no greater act of self love than a self-oil massage with Vata Abhyanga with Magnesium and Vitamin D. My skin simply drinks it up. While rubbing it in I am in bliss from the aromatherapeutic benefits as well--it smells divine. I think about the calming, detoxifying effect and above all the nourishment I am getting from the magnesium and D. I imagine it is getting into my bones to support bone health. I use it a lot on my shins and calves to prevent muscle cramps. This product is expensive and worth every penny.

    I rub this oil on my 3 and a half year old daughter every night after a bath. It helps her calm her nerves down as she is mainly Vata Pitta and helps her get a good night sleep.

    I love this Vata oil so much! I don't like the smell of sesame oil and pretty most Vata oils have a strong sesame smell. I don't know how you did it but you made a heavenly-scented Vata oil. And I love the added benefit of Vitamin D and Magnesium!
