Bacopa monnieri is the Latin name. Aindri or jal brahmi are the Sanskrit names.
According to the centuries old Bhava Prakash Ayurvedic text, bacopa is used to strengthen the mind and improve memory and learning (medhya), balance the heart (hridya), improve skin conditions (kushtaghni), treat insanity (unmad), increase low digestive fire (vahni manda), remove partially digested food (ama), help constipation (vibandha), treat blood diseases (asrigruja), help fever due to high pitta (jwara), reduce chronic cough (kas), and bind and remove toxins (visha) in the body (it helps with all four types of toxins ama, amavisha, garavisha and indravajravijanyavisha).
Bacopa, or aindri, is a very divine herb. It must be harvested during the full moon day or night. The people who harvest it must use the mind purifying mantra before harvesting. It must be kept in a pure environment to preserve the divinity of the plant.
Vaidya Mishra holds to the strict guidelines of his family tradition for harvesting, drying and keeping aindri, so that you can get the full benefit of the herb. This herb is wildcrafted and has not come in contact with industrial chemicals of any kind. If the divinity of the herb is corrupted, the effectiveness will be minimized.
Bacopa is often used in conjunction with gotu kola (mandukaparni) in Vaidya Mishra's family tradition. Bacopa has more soma (cooling, nurturing intelligence of nature) while gotu kola has more agni (warming, transforming intelligence of nature). The two used together have almost all of the properties of the ancient, now extinct, brahmi plant.
