Tulsi seeds, instead of tulsi leaves, may be recommended by your Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner in certain cases, especially for menopausal women.
The Latin name is: ocimum sanctum, or ocimum tenuiflorum. In Sanskrit it is called tulasi, meaning "beyond compare." Tulsi also goes by the name, holy basil.
The vibration of tulsi is more concentrated in seed form, which makes the seeds more heating than tulsi leaves. Bhava Prakash describes tulsi as katuka (pungent), ushna (heating), dipani (igniting the digestive fire) and dahapittakrit (giving burning sensations and increasing pitta).
For this reason, it is not advised for high-pitta people to use tulsi except in combination with other herbs and in small quantity. The seeds are even more heating and should be used only under the guidance of your Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner.
We are all divine, but divinity is covered by "asleepness." Tulsi is a plant which is fully awake to the divine. When we take tulsi, it awakens the divine vibration inside of us.
There is a story of how a young girl, full of devotion for God, became the life-giving tulsi plant. For details, listen to Vaidya Mishra's 99¢ audio download about tulsi. This story helps to explain the deeply sattwic (life-supporting) vibration of the herb. You will also learn about many other properties of tulsi in this 23 minute MP3 audio file, which you can download and listen to at your leisure.
According to the ancient Ayurvedic text, Bhava Prakash, tulsi is surasa (liked by the gods) and devadundubhi (having a divine vibration). It is also said to be bhutaghni (bactericidal) and apetarakshasi (able to hinder the growth of harmful pathogens).
While some the physical properties, such as its bitter taste and kapha reducing qualities, contribute to this, the main power for reducing pathogens is the vibrational energy of tulsi. The Sanskrit words can even be interpreted to mean that tulsi removes spirits (the words bhuta and rakshasa can mean hidden pests of any kind including bacteria, viruses or spirits).
The best way to remove spirits is to strengthen the light of soul. When the light is shining brightly in the heart and mind, spirits have no place to hide.
Likewise, when digestion is strong (as helped by the flame-enhancing property of tulsi) and intelligence is high (as contributed by the bitter taste of tulsi) bacteria cannot thrive. Bacteria thrive on sweet taste and lots of ama (partially digested food), the physical counterpart to darkness.
Though bacteria and ghosts may seem to be completely unrelated, Ayurveda sees them as two different expressions of the same. They both thrive in darkness and flee in light.
Tulsi is a sensitive plant. It does not grow where there is too much rajas (anger and passion) or tamas (inertia, dirt and laziness). When you introduce a divine herb into the body for the purpose of increasing the light, it is important that the herb you use be vibrationally pure.
If the tulsi you use has been challenged by negative vibrations in the environment where it was growing, where it was harvested, where it was processed, or where it was stored, its ability to help increase sattwa (light) is compromised. Also, if the plant material has been sitting for a long time and the potency of its vibration has diminished, then it will not be very effective in connecting you to the light of your own soul.
For this reason, Vaidya Mishra is very careful at every stage of the growing, harvesting, processing and storing of tulsi, and other herbs, to preserve the divine vibration of the plant. When you use these seeds, or any other of Vaidya Mishra's herbal products, you will notice the prana (vibrational energy) that is present, ready to go to work for you.
