Product Description

According to the Ayurvedic text, Bhava Prakash, gokshura is an excellent herb for detoxifying the genitourinary tract (basti shodhana), balancing apana vata (vatanut), improving physical and sexual stamina (balakrit and vrishya), building all the dhatus (bringhana), helping to balance the heart (krichahridaroganut), and preventing kidney stones (ashmarihara).

How Can One Herb Do So Much?

If you look closely, this herb accomplishes two things very well. In fact, all of the other benefits can be derived from these two:

  1. Gokshura is very good a building up the dhatus (tissues), especially shukra dhatu.
  2. Gokshura is very good at cleaning the genitourinary tract.

Gokshura Builds the Dhatus (Tissues)

The two prabhavas (special properties) mentioned by Bhava Prakash in this regard are bringhana and vrishya. Bringhana literally means that gokshura builds all the dhatus (tissues), and vrishya means that gokshura improves the quality of shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue).

Gokshura accomplishes this because it contains a balanced amount of soma and agni. Gokshura is full of soma, and is declared to be pushtidas (giving a lot of nourishment). But gokshura is also dipana (increasing the metabolic flames (agni) between each of the dhatus).

By supplying soma, and increasing agni simultaneously, gokshura insures that the soma becomes tissue and not ama (partially digested material). Food is increased to the tissues and hunger at the level of the tissues is increased at the same time. This is a sure formula for building the tissues. This is why gokshura is balakrit (increasing physical and sexual stamina).

Gokshura Especially Builds Shukra Dhatu

The term, vrishya, means that gokshura puts special attention on building shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue). The molecules of gokshura travel quickly to the shukra dhatu (the most refined and difficult dhatu to reach) and give nourishment (pushtidas) and agni stimulation (dipana) there.

The specialty of gokshura lies in the cleaning and strengthening of the genitourinary tract. It is natural, therefore, that it would be especially good at building shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue) above all other tissues.

Gokshura Cleans the Genitourinary Tract

The fact that gokshura cleans the genitourinary tract is a prabhava (unpredicted effect) of gokshura that is not derived from its other properties. Bhava Prakash labels this property as bastishodhana (cleaning the bladder).

Not only does it remove toxins from the bladder wall, it also helps to remove toxins from the other genitourinary organs. The result is a pH-balanced, free flowing system.

When the genitourinary system is not obstructed by toxins, apana vata (the downward flow of prana in the body) becomes nicely balanced. Roughness of the genitourinary channels (from exposure to acidic toxins) and blockages in those same channels are the two biggest irritants to apana vata.

When they are removed, apana can flow normally. That is why Bhava Prakash says that gokshura is vatanut (reducing vata imbalance).

This ability to clean the genitourinary tract is also why Bhava Prakash says that gokshura is ashmarihara (preventing the formation of kidney stones).

And remarkably enough, it is also why gokshura is said to be krichahridaroganut (helpful in the case of chronic heart problems). When the waste material of the blood is flowing freely from the body through a healthy urinary system, the toxins of the heart (when removed by other herbs) can be taken successfully out of the body.

If you try to detoxify the heart without insuring that the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra are all balanced, the toxins from the heart could end up doing damage there, or getting reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
