Ashwagandha is wonderful herb for improving stamina. Ashwa means "horse" in Sanskrit, and gandha means "smell," or essential character. Ashwagandha gives you many of the characteristics of horses, known for their tremendous stamina. Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb, which means that it helps you cope with stress, especially mental and physical stress.
Horses are not only strong, they have the ability to handle an ever increasing workload. Race horses, for example, are constantly trained to run faster and faster. This ever increasing stress on the body requires both physical and mental stamina. Most other kinds of animals would not be able to handle it. Ashwagandha root gives you this ability to withstand the ever-increasing demands of life.
Learn eight prabhavas (special qualities) of ashwagandha in Vaidya Mishra's 32 minute audio lecture: Ashwagandha - Learn About a Great Herb for Stamina, available for instant download for $0.99. You will also learn other names and physical properties of this famous Ayurvedic herb.
Ashwagandha is contraindicated for the pitta physiology, especially if there is a lot of amavisha (reactive toxins) in the body. The reason is that it has both an ushna guna (warming physical effect) and ushna virya (deeply heating quantum property, or potency). Ironically, high pitta people are often drawn to herbs like ashwagandha because they constantly put more and more stress on themselves.
For driven people, ashwagandha may not be the herb of choice, when compared to herbs, foods and lifestyle choices that give more soma (are more cooling and nurturing to the body). Sometimes, making priority choices about what races you want to run is the best way to get rid of excess mental stress.
However, this herbal memory nectar (Vaidya Mishra's alternative delivery system) delivers the balya prabhava (strengthening quality) of ashwagandha without the ushna guna (heating quality). Gunas are physical properties. Since the herbal memory nectar does not contain the physical herb, just its essence suspended in the somagenic nectar of sweet squashes, you get the benefit of ashwagandha without the heating effect. This is the perfect delivery system if this herb is needed for a pitta person.
